Listen to our radio ad!
It's March Madness time! If you're sitting on the couch watching the basketball tournament this month, it could be a good time to recuperate from a vasectomy! If you are considering a vasectomy, you can schedule one at Chesapeake Urology and enjoy the tournament while getting rest and relaxation. Appointments are open in many of our locations throughout the Metro Baltimore area. Call 877-422-8237 for an appointment.
- It's a relatively brief procedure (usually under 30 minutes) and it is 99.9% effective.
- Appointments are open in our centers in the Baltimore area.
- After your vasectomy, you can put your feet up, keep a bag of frozen peas handy, and enjoy the basketball madness.
Vasectomy: An Intro to Permanent Male Birth Control and How It Works Most men are surprised by how safe* and straightforward a vasectomy usually is. A vasectomy works by blocking sperm from entering the fluid that you ejaculate. Since this denies the sperm their "ride" to her egg, it prevents fertilization. And it does this without affecting your manhood in any way. You'll still ejaculate the same amount of fluid and there's no effect on sex drive. A vasectomy may cause tenderness and swelling and requires a few days of rest and inactivity for recovery. March Madness, with its endless TV programming of college basketball, provides an ideal opportunity for rest and relaxation. *Vasectomies are safe, but check with a Chesapeake Urology doctor to understand all the risks.
Preparation See your doctor for prep instructions. Here are some things you may be asked to do:
- Don't take aspirin or other blood thinners (e.g., anti-inflammatory medications) ten days prior to surgery.
- Shave the front of your scrotum the day of the surgery.
- Wear supportive underwear or jock strap on the day of surgery.
- Arrange for a ride home for comfort and safety.
- Optional, but recommended: frozen peas, video games, sporting events or man-movies ready for your arrival home.
- And don't forget food and beverages.
Road to Recovery Go home and rest with your feet elevated for a day or two. Reduce swelling with an ice or a bag of peas, and/or an athletic supporter. Other than that, take advantage of down time to watch the games. Regarding sex: Since it can take time to be totally sperm-free, pregnancy is possible for up to twelve weeks. So arrange for other birth control until lab tests come back sperm-free. Your doctor will give you instructions for resuming work and sexual activity, typically after three to four days. Vasectomies may be reversible, but you should not assume your procedure can be reversed. Talk with your doctor to learn more.
